MONTERO, PERU
June 2010
The description of Montero, Peru is a far cry from the description of Lima, Peru.
Lima is home to over 23 million residents, while Montero has a population of around 2,000
people. ( The village of Montero is surrounded by 43 other rural villages making
the complete area population 10,000 residents.) Lima is noisy and very polluted.
Montero is tropical and is surrounded by big mountains, green with vegetation.
Be sure to bring your camera.
Lima, capitol of Peru, has the only International Airport in Peru. This mission team would fly into Lima, and then take a second short flight to Piura. Piura is a coastal city in the far north of Peru. From there, the team will travel by bus ( 2½ - 3 hours ) to the clinic site. We have not heard of any past eyeglass team ever coming to this corner of the world. There is a great need for us here. What an opportunity for VOSH Minnesota to help this area.
Dr Greg Friederichs, who has been with eye missions to Chimbote, Peru, twice, will be heading up this team. He can be contacted at gafrie@mchsi.com.
Two former residents of Montero, who now live in Minnesota, will be joining this mission and are anxious to show the team around the area.
There will be beach opportunities in the city of Piura, or if anyone needs real excitement before or after the mission, Peru offers the Amazon River or Machu Picchu.
We have reached our quota for interested team members. But we can put you on a back up list.
